This isn't a breed for everyone. Never underestimate the Jack Russell Terrier. The JRT is a very happy, outgoing, (sometimes outlasting), and smart confident type of dog with loads of energy. They will bark when a stranger comes to your home and then greet them with kisses. Some JRT’s are independent and will sniff the stranger and then walk away while others will jump all over your guest and lick them.
The JRT was bred to hunt quarry. They may dig up your garden or anything planted in your yard, including the grass. Some JRT’s are constantly looking for something to move so they can give chase and kill. Others, not very common, will ignore all critters, no instinct to hunt. JRT’s may even think your cat is a tasty morsel and give chase until caught. If they want it and can’t get to it, they will bark non-stop. That is a trait that been bred into them. “Bark and they will come.” The owner, that is. JRT’s have a sense of self-preservation and will not tolerate children pestering them. A JRT may bite a child if they pull their tail, leg, ear, pet them too hard, grab them to give kisses, poke at them, etc. If they don’t like it they may bite. JRT’s can also become jealous of a new baby. JRT’s were bred to tune into high-pitched sounds and may think a crying baby is quarry. These are things that could be worked out of a JRT but if you aren’t an experienced trainer you may want to consider adopting another breed of dog. "....other dogs need additional work to establish their handler as the pack leader. What I have found is that handlers often inadvertently allow things to happen in their normal life that helps develop a dominant behavior in their dogs." If a male isn't neutered at an early age you can end up with an aggressive male or female for that matter. Here is good training advise for the prevention of aggressive males. Most of the JRT’s that come into the rescue range in size from 9 to 17 inches tall. --As a caring rescue, we take in all sizes, no discrimination here-- There are several different registries for the different heights, that you could register your rescued JRT with. A JRT is all white or mostly white with black, tan, red, or brown markings, and sometimes with black and tan, red, or brown. Some have tiny little spots all over their body that look like freckles. The coat comes in SMOOTH, BROKEN, OR ROUGH. All coats shed, sometimes smooths shed more. Please do your research before adopting a JRT.
